Jigsaw- The mindful approach to PSHE

PSHE, Relationships and Sex Education Consultation

We have taught Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) in school for many years and have always followed the DfE guidelines. The DfE have recently reviewed their policies and the Education Secretary made Relationships, Sex and Health Education statutory in all schools. With this in mind we have reviewed our current policy and would like to take this opportunity to share it with parents/carers.

As part of implementing the RSE curriculum, schools must consult with the children, parents, staff and governors to ensure there is a general consensus on our approaches to policy and the curriculum content.

As part of this, parents, staff and governors, will be asked to read through the Policy which will be sent to parents today on Monday 19th July through Parent Mail. At this point if parents have any feedback they are invited to contact Mrs Knowles or myself within the consultation period to discuss this further. The policy will also be available on the school’s website.

Hendal Primary School will be starting this consultation process today on Monday 19th July 2021; the consultation will close on Monday 26th July 2021.

Relationship Education and Health Education are both statutory, this includes lessons on Puberty. These lessons are taught through our spiral, age appropriate scheme called Jigsaw. We are excited to launch the new scheme in September and we invite children to come dressed in their favourite colour on Friday 10th of September (more information to follow) in recognition that all children are unique and individual.

Within the policy, there is an overview table that highlights the areas of Relationship and Sex Education lessons that parents have the right to withdraw their child from (these are the sections highlighted in red only). If parents wish to do so they are requested to consult with the headteacher, Mrs Ashton, before they withdraw their child.

If you do have any feedback please email comments or questions to or during the consultation period and we will then review our parent/carer responses in order to inform or adapt our policy if required.
