It is important that all children gain an understanding of the world they are growing up in, and learn how to live alongside, and show respect for, a diverse range of people.

The curriculum at Hendal is planned and delivered so that our children develop age-appropriate knowledge and understanding about the Protected Characteristics. This is done through our Personal Development offer, the curriculum we teach and the safe environment we have created.

We have key messages and displays all through school to ensure the messages of inclusion, equality, diversity and respect are reinforced at all times. All staff have high expectations and model the behaviour and language that is accepted and taught at Hendal.

As a school we have assemblies that are part of JIGSAW and Picture News. Both of these resources have direct links to British Values as well as Protected Characteristics.

Children are encouraged at all times to be proud of what makes them unique as well as what similarities they have with others. We celebrate key dates through the year such as anti-bullying week and children are actively involved at leading during these weeks.

Books and stories are used as part of each unit of work and we plan carefully to ensure we share books and stories that reflect a diverse range of people. It is important children can stand in our library and in our classrooms and feel that the environment represents them, their peers, their families and the community they live in.

Our PSHE curriculum JIGSAW allows us to ensure we promote the characteristics fully in a pupil centred way. Please see below the overview of how the characteristics are carefully interwoven into the PSHE curriculum.

Different Families, Same Love

As a school we use resources from Stonewall from Nursery to Year 6. We have a celebration display in the dinner hall that shows a beautiful collage of the families our children belong to. Children have their family photos proudly displayed and children are seen often looking at the display with their friends.
