School Council

School Council

School councils are a brilliant way for young people to influence and lead on school decisions. They play a role in making important decisions that affect the running of the school. They are a  great way for young people to play an active role in school democracy.

We think it is important for children to feel involved in decision making at Hendal Primary. From Year 1 onwards, each year group has the opportunity to nominate two representatives to be part of the School Council. The School Council elects a Chairperson, a Vice Chair, a Treasurer and a Secretary and meetings are held fortnightly. Each corridor has a suggestion box to enable all children to put their ideas to the Council.

What we have done so far:

Our School Councillors have led a Remembrance Assembly to remember our fallen soldiers.

Our roles and responsibilities each week:

Every Friday, a School Council meeting will be held to discuss the weekly focus.

  • Silent corridors
  • Wearing the correct uniform with pride
  • Looking after school property (indoor and outdoor)
  • Showing respect to ourselves and others
  • Lining up after play times ready to learn
  • Tidy corridors and cloakrooms

The Councillors are then responsible for monitoring the children in their own year groups and team points will be rewarded for anyone correctly following the week’s focus.

On a Friday, the Councillors will report back to the Student Council to share the good practice they have seen.
