School Sports Teams and Competitions

Football  and Netball Leagues

As part of our school pyramid, children from Years 4 to 6 participate in competitive football and netball leagues throughout the year. There are also opportunities for children of all abilities to take part in development matches within the pyramid. Our aim is to ensure children understand that matches are competitive but they are also learning opportunities and a great chance to make new friends, learn new skills and apply them in a competitive setting. Our overall goal is to sustain the love of competition and provide links to local clubs so children can continue competing outside of school hours. We are proud to say that children who hadn’t previously played competitively have gone onto to play at district, county and professional standards. We offer children the opportunity to captain their school team, promoting leadership, fair play and overall sportsmanship. All successes are celebrated during our weekly mentions assemblies.

Competitions

At Hendal Primary all school staff encourage young people to participate in sport and competitive opportunities. We take part in a rich, range of sporting competitions on offer as part of the Kettlethorpe pyramid and Outwood School Sports Partnership. We encourage pupils to compete and demonstrate well rounded ‘sportsmanship’. Where possible our Kettlethorpe pyramid level 1 competitions follow the School Games format.

The School Games is a unique opportunity to motivate and inspire millions of young people across the country to take part in more competitive school sport.

The Games are made up of four levels of activity: competition in schools, between schools, at county/area level and a national finals event:

Level 1 – sporting competition for all students in school through intra-school competition and local pyramid competitions

Level 2 – individuals and teams are selected to represent their schools in local inter-school competitions

Level 3 – the county/area will stage multi-sport School Games festivals as a culmination of year-round school sport competition

Level 4 – the School Games finals: a national multi-sport event where the most talented young people in the UK will be selected to compete in our national sporting venues.

Yorkshire Sport Foundation organise the Level 3 Games in South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire. We are proud to say we have had many children represent Wakefield at Level 3 in sports ranging from netball to cross country to orienteering.
