Curriculum Statement of Intent for Design and Technology

Design and technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. At Hendal Primary School, we believe that Design and Technology prepares children to participate in the development of our rapidly changing world. It encourages children to become independent, creative problem-solvers and thinkers; both as an individual, and as part of a team. We recognise that, creative thinking encourages children to make positive changes to their quality of life. The subject enables pupils to identify different needs and opportunities and gives them time to respond to them by developing ideas and eventually making products and systems.

Through the study of Design and technology, pupils combine practical skills with an understanding of aesthetic, social and environmental issues, as well as functions and industrial practices. This allows them to reflect and evaluate (present and past projects) including elements like: their uses and their impacts on the world. Additionally, through teaching Design and Technology, children acquire and develop a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as: mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. At Hendal Primary School, we believe that through teaching Design and Technology we will help all our children to become astute and informed future consumers and most importantly potential innovators, who are able to contribute positively to the wider community.

The aims of design and technology in our school are:

· To develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world.
· To build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users.
· To critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others.
· To understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.

Our DT curriculum is planned carefully to ensure we foster the school Curriculum Drivers.
