Early Years

Children develop their understanding of number and space, shape and measures.

Key Stage One and Two

 Mathematics is a core subject and is divided into the following areas;

Number

  • Number and place value
  • Addition and subtraction
  • Multiplication and division
  • Fractions

Measurement

Geometry

  • Properties of shapes
  • Position and direction

Statistics

Ratio and proportion (Year 6)

Algebra (Year 6)

 

 

Practical experience is essential to a child’s understanding of mathematics.

Discovery, understanding and the acquisition of computational skills are important; as they involve reckoning and calculation, much needed as the means to solving problems.

A variety of organisational methods (individual or group,) is used to allow for differentiation of ability.
